When I meet with victims families, they often share vivid memories of when their lives were torn apart.

For homicide cases, it's usually the moment they were informed their loved ones were killed.

It's the worst part of policing, having to do that.

Over nearly two decades, Staff Sergeant Darren Smith has met with countless families.

It never gets any easier. You know that your words are going to destroy them.

And there's nothing you can do to spare them that pain.

So really, it's being direct with them, telling them what happened. They're going to have a lot of questions.

But there's nothing you can do. You can see as you're talking to them, their life is crumbling in front of you.

It's even tougher when multiple families are involved.

So I think I take years off my life every time I do it, but it's what you have to do.
