Summary

Jacob is a socialist community organizer living in Philadelphia. He helps run the Community Action Relief Project (CARP), a mutual aid organization committed to sharing resources and redistributing wealth throughout the Kensington neighborhood and broader Philadelphia. In addition to hosting political reading groups and building relationships with neighborhood groups for CARP, his creative pursuits include poetry, comedy, and ASMR videos. Jacob joined Rachel not to denounce or advocate for any broad political ideology but to warn potential recruits to the specific group he was involved with (PSL) by sharing his own personal experience. In this first part of Rachel's two-part conversation with Jacob, he explains how he first got involved with The Party for Socialism and Liberation, a high control group in the world of political organizing. Jacob breaks down some of the cult-like tactics of control that were commonplace in his branch. Rachel offers her insights into the groups' use of manipulative language and pressure to overachieve to the point of exhaustion. They discuss in detail the restrictive nature of the organization, as well as its intolerance of dissent both in public and private. Before You Go: Rachel emphasizes the point Jacob made about questioning why so many people involved with his group left on bad terms. She explains how you can examine the nature of an organization by noting its reaction to your dissenting opinions or refusal of demands. which, as he details it, was filled with corruption, institutional bigotry, and had cult-like behavior.

1:00.6

This is an interesting conversation where we talk about political and social movements being run like cults.

Here's part one of my conversation with Jacob now.

1:26.6

I am very happy to have Jacob with me on the show today.

1:30.1

Jacob is one of these people who has had an experience that we actually haven't talked enough about on the show.

1:39.3

I talk a lot about how control comes in many different forms and different arenas. And sometimes in

1:46.8

places and spaces that people are not assuming, especially when you're going because you feel

1:54.4

that people will be of like mind and you think that people are going to have a certain kind of

1:58.6

standard of behavior. And so you can lower your defenses, especially when there's sort of a common cause.

2:06.7

And so the reason, again, that I call this show indoctrination and not, you know, cults is

2:16.3

because sometimes then people will be looking for cult groups that they're

2:21.6

familiar with. And then if it's not that group, they'll think, oh, this other group must be safe

2:26.4

because it doesn't have this cult name and other people haven't necessarily called it a cult.

2:31.8

But this is about the nature of the relationship between kind of the

2:36.5

people in charge and the people who go, but also sometimes the subtle and not so subtle

2:41.7

forms of manipulation. So this is going to kind of expand the discussion in a way that I really

2:49.7

like. And I think it is really kind of educational and is
