Sharon Horgan (2023 Emmy nominee for Outstanding Lead Actress and Writing in a Drama Series) can’t seem to stop creating television shows. From ‘Pulling’ to ‘Catastrophe’ to ‘Divorce’ to ‘Motherland’ to ‘Shining Vale’ to her latest, the Apple TV+ comedy thriller ‘Bad Sisters,’ she is one of the most prolific TV showrunners in the game. In this episode, Horgan talks about going outside of her comfort zone for her new show and creating her first truly villainous character after years of writing flawed but ultimately sympathetic figures. She also reflects on how she met her ‘Catastrophe’ co-creator and co-star Rob Delaney on Twitter, remembers her final dinner with the late Carrie Fisher (who just happened to bring along Salman Rushdie) and looks ahead to the even more personal show she’s hoping to create next.
This episode was originally published on August 23rd, 2022.

0:00.0 | This is The Last Laugh. I'm Matt Wilstein from The Daily Beast, and this week we are continuing our series of episodes featuring this year's Emmy nominees by revisiting a conversation I had last year with one of my absolute favorite TV creators, Sharon Horgan. |
0:22.3 | My guess is that a lot more of you have caught up on her excellent Apple TV Plus series |
0:26.9 | Bad Sisters now than when Sharon and I first talked last summer. |
0:31.1 | And now she is nominated for both outstanding lead actress and outstanding writing for the show, |
0:36.7 | which I guess the Emmys consider |
0:38.3 | a drama, but is easily one of the most darkly funny things I've seen in a long time. |
0:43.5 | We talked the morning after the Bad Sisters premiere in London and went pretty deep on |
0:48.2 | everything that went into making that show, but also talked a lot about her earlier collaboration |
0:52.8 | with Rob Delaney on Catastrophe, |
0:55.1 | the criminally underseen Motherland, and the even more personal show she hopes to do next. |
1:01.1 | Sharon really is one of the smartest and funniest writers working today, |
1:05.3 | so now that at least the writer's strike is finally over, |
1:08.3 | I cannot wait to see what she does next. |
1:12.5 | We will be back with all new episodes very soon, but for now, here's me with Sharon Horgan. You had your London premiere |
1:19.2 | last night? Yeah. How did that go? It went really well. It went really well. People |
1:23.9 | really responded. You know, they're nerve-wracking things because you spent two and a half years working on something |
1:29.8 | and then anything that sort of culminates in one big night feels a bit, you know, overwhelming. |
1:36.7 | But really nice response from the audience. |
1:39.6 | And we'd had our premiere in New York the week before. |
1:43.4 | And it was lovely but more bijou. |
1:45.5 | And so this was at the BFI British Film Institute on the South Bank, and it was just, it was beautiful and really nice crowd. |
1:53.7 | And, yeah, it seems to work. |
