And as the ships pushed deeper and deeper into space, the time of voyage increased by

geometrical progression.

It became more and more difficult to persuade able spacemen to sign on for flights which lasted

for years, 10 to 15 monotonous years in the cramped focal of a deep spacer.

The bar rooms in one-armed joints in Scully Square in Boston were plastered with recruiting

posters for the deep space star runs. Flashy four-color signs with a blue-eyed young man
