Summary

In September of 2007, the skeletal remains of Sergeant Patrick Rust were found in a field outside of Watertown, New York. Immediately, the Army CID changed the course of their investigation, steering their focus away from an AWOL soldier to a non-combat death.

Likewise, since Patrick's remains were found outside of Watertown - in rural Jefferson County - the case was handed off from Watertown PD to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department. They, too, began investigating the case as an "unknown death," as both the manner and cause of death proved impossible to identify.

Throughout the next several years, the investigation would stumble through several roadblocks and detours, ultimately resulting in a story that remains unfinished...

Part two of two.

On September 16th, 2007, six months to the day after 24-year-old Patrick Rust,

1:07.8

a sergeant in the United States Army had gone missing. A farmer discovered skeletal remains

1:13.4

while cutting hay on his property. This land, which was southwest of the Jefferson Lewis Board of

Cooperative Education Services, was near the Watertown Houndsfield border off of Old Rome State Road.

It was about five miles away from the clueless bar where Patrick Rust had last been seen.

The body, which had decomposed to the point of being described as skeletal, was found wearing

1:38.3

Patrick's clothing, as well as having a number of his personal belongings. This included his

1:43.8

military identification, his ATM cards, roughly $80 in cash, his watch, a ring, gloves, which were

1:52.9

found in his pockets, not on his hands, and a single boot. His other boot was found a short distance

1:59.4

away, nearby a small walking path that did not get much foot traffic. Missing, most notably,

were his army dog tags. Many active duty soldiers wear their dog tags regularly,

2:11.8

even when they're in civilian clothing. The dog tags of Sergeant Patrick Rust would never be

recovered, leading many to think that if someone was involved in his death, they might have been

2:22.7

taken from him. An army pathology team would later confirm that the remains were indeed that of

2:29.2

Sergeant Patrick Rust.
