It's nearly 30 years since the first ever case of sexual harassment in India was brought to court. It became headline news and divided the country

as the accused was a senior policeman celebrated for fighting militants.

I've been speaking to Rupandiel Bajaj about the incident

she couldn't ignore. This happens to every woman once or twice in her life. Things like rape, unfortunate people to whom it

happens. They are few, but this happens to each woman. And in 1988 it happened

to Rupaniobajaj.

It changed her life as well as the lives of the half a billion or so women in India.

She may be educated, uneducated, she may be working class, she may be an officer, she may be high-ranking officer like me, all women.

Nobody's immune.

She herself had climbed the ranks of the senior civil service in the northern state of Punjab.

I was in the top 10% in the seniority of the officers and I had about 20,000 employees working under me.

Her story began at an official party to celebrate Punjab'sab's most senior policeman, Mr. KPS Gill, in his battle against militants.

During the party, Mrs. Bejarge noticed the guest of honor approaching her.

And he came and he stood right in front of me,

his legs almost touching mine.

They were about six inches from me,

tarring above me, he put the finger in my face like that and he said up, come on, up,

come along with me.

So I said, I said Mr Gill, go away from here, go away from here.

Go away from here. You're misbehaving.
