Summary
"Evolution" (August 19, 1999)
If you came of age in the late 90s or early 2000s, you live in a world informed by Sex and the City — whether you realize it or not. It's probably one of the most influential TV shows to air during our lifetimes, and so it's more than time that we look at one of its many LGBTQ-themed episodes. Joining us to discuss Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte is returning guest Gwynedd Stuart, who has big feelings about why this show matters.
Listen to Gwynedd's previous episode about Soap.
Most of Drew's background on how SATC ended up at HBO comes from this Vulture article. And here is the 1991 New York Times article about Woody Allen and Mia Farrow waving at each other from across Central Park.
Listen to Drew discussing Bowser, King of the Koopa, on the Retronauts podcast.

| 0:55.7 | Thank you so much. Gwinnett previously guested on our soap episode. So I think the through line for you is well-dressed women trying to reason out what they want out of life emotionally and sexually. I think that's really important because I'm actually currently rewatching who's the boss. And Mona is, I mean, if you love Catherine Hellman, just go for it. |
| 1:13.8 | Watch who's the boss. |
| 1:14.5 | If yeah. And we called that the episode where basically Who's the Boss Call him a Little Faggot. I know. Tim just watched that episode. My husband, Tim, just watched that episode without me. And I was very upset about it. Does it make him rewatch it with you? No, no, I will. Well, actually, it sounds really sad, too. It's a good Jonathan episode. but I am willing to bet there are further Jonathan episodes down the line. |
| 1:46.6 | So if you and Ken are those, let me know. |
| 1:48.6 | When he wears a big bag of sweaters and is trying to, like, be fashionable, but it's just really calling more attention to the issue. |
| 1:55.6 | I was going to say, so, yeah, if you guys ever want to talk about who's the boss again, please have me on because I have a lot to say about a show that I think was supposed to feel progressive at the time that you watch it now and you're just like, wow, this man's destroying her life. |
| 2:13.1 | Who gives him the right? |
| 2:15.2 | There's a whole community episode about it. |
| 2:17.1 | But yeah, like the title of the show is like, |
| 2:18.9 | I can't figure out who the boss of the house is. Is it the man or the woman who owns the house? Who is the right? He's paying his salary. Yes. I just can't figure it out. It's impossible. Sets the tone in a very sick way. No, but you don't understand. He's attractive. He is cute. |
