Summary

Naomi Klein joins PTO to talk about her book, 'Doppelganger: A Trip Into the Mirror World'. In the first part of our conversation we talked about why at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, parts of the anti-vaccine movement started to adopt the garb and the language of participants in struggles against racism and the historic crimes of settler colonialism. In the second part we talked about Israel and Palestine and how the notion of 'doppelganger politics' can be applied to the way Israel views the Palestinians. We also talked about how European fascism of the twentieth century is typically portrayed as being the diametric opposite of liberal democracy, in spite of the extent to which Nazism took direct inspiration from both European colonial practices and racial segregation in the United States. Before you listen to this episode, just a quick word about PTO's unexpected new followers.

So last week I was alerted to the fact that PTO's listener rating on Spotify

0:09.6

was suddenly a mere 1.5 stars out of 5.

0:14.2

Now, it's been a while since I checked, but my recollection was that the rating used to be over

0:18.3

4.5 stars.

0:20.1

And as well as the rating now being dramatically lower, I also saw that the rating used to be over 4.5 stars. And as well as the rating now being dramatically

0:22.1

lower, I also saw that the show now has hundreds of more ratings than it did just a couple of

0:27.6

months back. Now, there's no way of knowing for certain, but this looks very much like a coordinated

0:33.2

attempt to gain the algorithms to make it less likely that PTO will show up in the Spotify search

0:39.2

engine or to be recommended to listeners of other podcasts by the platform.

0:44.4

Incidentally, the same thing has happened to at least two other left podcasts and possibly more.

0:49.7

Owen Jones's show and Michael Walker's crash course have experienced the same thing.

0:54.8

And perhaps not coincidentally, in all three cases, this has occurred while all three of us have been doing

0:59.0

lots of interviews relating to Israel's genocidal attack on Gaza. So I'm asking you today if you

1:04.9

would do me a huge favour and help to make the show easier for listeners to find by rating the show

1:10.1

on Spotify.

1:11.5

You can find a link to the Spotify page in the description of today's episode

1:15.6

or by searching for Politics Theory Other on Spotify.

1:19.8

Importantly, please be sure to rate the public version, not the patrons-only stream,

1:24.6

which is currently unaffected.

1:26.7

Now, if you don't ordinarily listen to the show on Spotify,

1:29.3

you may be asked to listen to some episodes first. But all you need to do in that case is to click
