| 0:26.7 | Septic arthritis is essentially where an infection occurs in a joint. |
| 0:31.7 | And this could be a native joint, meaning it's the person's original joint, |
| 0:35.7 | or it could be in a joint replacement. |
| 0:38.4 | For example, if they've had a hip replacement and that replacement becomes infected infection in a joint is an emergency as the infection |
| 0:46.7 | can quickly spread to destroy the joint or it can cause very severe systemic illness and sepsis and |
| 0:54.0 | potentially lead to death quite quickly. |
| 0:56.9 | Septic arthritis has a mortality of around 10%, so it needs to be recognised early and treated properly. |
| 1:03.9 | It's also a very common and important complication of joint replacement |
| 1:08.1 | and is something that orthopedic surgeons spend a lot of time worrying about when they replace joints. |
| 1:13.8 | It occurs in around 1% of straightforward hip or knee replacements. |
| 1:18.6 | And this percentage is higher when it's a revision surgery to correct a previous replacement that's gone wrong. |
| 1:26.3 | So what's the presentation? |
| 1:28.1 | Well usually septic arthritis only affects a single joint, |
| 1:31.2 | and often this is a knee, |
| 1:33.3 | and it presents with a rapid onset of a red, hot, swollen and painful joint. |
| 1:39.5 | There will be stiffness in the joint and reduce rains of motion, |
| 1:43.0 | and there can be systemic symptoms such as fever, |
| 1:46.4 | lethargy, and signs of sepsis. The most common causative organism is staphlococcus aureus, |
