veteran Mike Capuano lost last night to Ayanna Presley, a 44-year-old Boston City Councilwoman

who was an aide to former representative Joe Kennedy and Senator John Kerry.

Presley, who will now hold the same seat as Tip O'Neill and John F. Kennedy, will be the first

black member to serve in the state's House delegation. Capuano is the fourth House incumbent to go

down. After representatives Mark Samford of South Carolina and Robert

Pittenger of North Carolina on the Republican side, and Representative Joe Crowley in New York,

who lost on the Democratic side. For weeks now, Democratic operatives and party officials have been

telling us that Capuana was going to be fine. He was an avowed progressive, they said. This wasn't another

situation where a long-time incumbent wasn't taking their race seriously enough. He'd gotten

endorsements from key validators, like the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation. And furthermore,

between July 1st and August 15th, Capuana spent more than $930,000.

But spent some time with Presley, as Anna did, and it doesn't take long to see she has a real

ability to connect with voters. She isn't a political upstart like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortes.

Presley's put in her time climbing the party establishment ranks, working in Democratic politics

since she was a kid in

Chicago, later as a senior staffer on Capitol Hill, and most recently as a surrogate for Hillary Clinton.

Presley, like many Democrats looking to move up in office, dealt with the refrain we hear a lot.

It's not your turn.

I knew this was going to be lonely, she said when Anna went to Boston to interview her for the
