Summary

On the eve of the next round of Rail strikes, could hitchhiking provide an alternative transport solution? I’m on the road in Wales, where I search (in vain, I might add) for a lift and tell you about my experiences of hitchhiking and how its changed in my time thumbing for a lift.

Hello and welcome to today's independent travel podcast with me Simon Calder the last of the week

0:08.4

of course the last of September indeed and it finds me well kind of hitchhiking through Wales

0:18.4

I say kind of because um on the road that I'm currently on, which is in

0:24.8

rural southeast Wales, mile or two outside the raglan, haven't actually been any cars.

0:33.6

So I'm only theoretically hitchhiking and there's a whole philosophical discussion there if someone is

0:40.5

If there is no traffic can someone truly be said to be hitchhiking who knows

0:47.7

But the reason it's relevant is that we've got well actually starting, Friday, a whole series of train cancellations,

0:58.1

89% of them cancelled tomorrow on Saturday, a similar number, likely to be cancelled on Wednesday,

1:09.5

when the train driver's working for 13 train operators will go on strike

1:13.3

and then about one in five trains will run next Saturday the 8th of October there's also

1:19.9

disruption running into Sunday due to Saturdays action and then Thursday Friday

1:26.4

Great Western Railways has problems with the

1:30.3

white collar rail union and that is going to lead to cancellations too as I was discussing only yesterday with you.

1:41.3

So the uphill bit has now begun doing a lot more hiking than hitching,

1:48.7

is hitchhiking possibly a short-term solution to the immediate travel crisis and maybe a longer-term

2:00.5

solution in terms of providing low cost transport.

2:05.9

Well, I know this even perhaps raising the subject could sound controversial.

2:13.3

And here I am. Certainly the fact I've been hitchhiking for oh hang on 54 years

2:23.8

means that I'm perhaps not exactly the typical hitchhiking demographic if there is such a

2:34.1

thing because few people are hitching these days I have typical hitchhiking demographic. If there is such a thing,

2:35.0

because few people are hitching these days,

2:38.0

I have noticed.
