This week, police in Cambodia arrested the former second-in-command of the Khmer Rouge,

the brutal communist regime that ruled Cambodia between April 1975 and January 1979.

Some accused Ngued Nguyen Chia, known as Brother No. 2, of being even more responsible than

Pol Pot for the estimated 1.7 million deaths that occurred under the Khmer Rouge.

Chia had been living free in a wooden house near the Thai border,

but the 82-year-old will now be tried for war crimes and crimes against humanity by UN-backed tribunals.

This may seem like a historic opportunity to reckon with the atrocities that have scarred so many Cambodians,

but as Megan Williams reported earlier this year,

the younger generation is not so eager to confront

the bloody legacy of the Khmer Rouge

or the hell their parents endured.

On the raised wooden veranda of a small home perched on stilts,

the women of Buang Vang sit and talk about the past.

Buang Vang is in central Cambodia, a tiny village just off a red clay road,

where palm trees shoot high into the sky.

Kovi-in holds her infant grandchild in her arms.

This 58-year-old was in her late 20s when Pol Pot took power.

By the time the regime fell, her sister, brother, and husband were all dead,

killed by the Khmer Rouge.
