It began shortly before sunset in the notorious five-points neighborhood of Lower Manhattan.

Now a bustling area packed with restaurants and boutique stores, it was then one of the most dangerous parts of the city.

Crime was rampant. Teenagers strolled the streets aimlessly, looking for action, and when there

was none, they decided to make their own. Not content to simply rob and assault people

at random, one particular gang of youths wanted a reason for their violence, and they found

one in an unexpected place,
