Summary
The weekend saw a hugely destructive earthquake occurring in Morocco, with thousands unfortunately losing their lives. One of the worst-hit areas was Marrakesh, a longed-for destination for travellers. The earthquake and repercussions as Morocco tries to find survivors and recuperate has left many wondering what they should do about bookings that are still going ahead. Simon explains the situation on the ground, what airlines are saying and what you can ask for if you had a holiday booked for Marrakesh.

| 0:00.0 | Hello and welcome to today's independent travel podcast with me Simon Calder. It's Monday the 11th of September. |
| 0:08.8 | And of course, we remember the loved ones of the victims of the terrible terrorist atrocity on 9-11 in 2001, in which nearly 3,000 people died. |
| 0:23.0 | And I'm afraid today I'm talking about another tragedy. |
| 0:25.9 | This was a natural calamity, the 6.8 magnitude earthquake that hit the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, |
| 0:33.7 | south of Marrakesh, at 11 minutes past 11 on Friday night. |
| 0:38.2 | As we know, the death toll is now well above 2,000 people, |

| 1:33.6 | to be continuing as normal, flights going in and out as scheduled. Many holiday companies |
| 1:40.4 | saying, well, the holiday's there, And certainly if you're looking more than a |
| 1:44.4 | week or two in advance, it seems likely that the presumption is that the trip will go ahead. |
| 1:52.0 | It's a difficult position for a lot of people to be in. They may well understandably be fearful of |
| 1:58.9 | further earthquakes. They might simply not wish to be in a location |
| 2:05.5 | which has been visited by such terrible tragedy and they of course don't want to get in the way |
| 2:12.3 | of the operation to try to help as many people as possible. But tourism will carry on in the rest of Morocco, |
| 2:23.7 | despite the sadness and the nation is in three days of mourning for the victims of the earthquake. |
