I'm Brian Lehrer. This is my daily politics podcast from WNYC Studios. It's Friday, March 26th.

Let's get right to Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. New Yorkers are invited to call your senator.

0:19.9

Anyone else may call to from blue states, red states, purple states, and any otheribrand. New Yorkers, you're invited to call your senator. Anyone else may call to from blue

0:22.1

states, red states, purple states, and any other color states, just make your calls relevant to things

0:26.6

that the U.S. Senate is dealing with. I'm going to start with voting rights and the filibuster that

0:31.5

stands in the way. And you think the COVID relief bill was big. Here comes the Biden

0:36.5

infrastructure bill, we're told,

0:38.5

which could be a trillion dollars or more bigger. And hello, Senator Gillibrand. Welcome back to WNYC.

0:44.9

1:38.5

I would love us to be able to govern effectively with a 60-vote threshold and have bipartisanship in all things.

1:46.3

But I've really seen Mitch McConnell close ranks, and you saw it in the first COVID-release

1:52.4

package that should have been widely bipartisan, and we are likely to see it in the next COVID

1:57.9

package, which is probably why we'll do that again through reconciliation.

2:01.3

Well, you mentioned McConnell. Republicans object to a variety of provisions in the For the People

2:07.3

Voting Rights Act that they don't want the federal government to impose on the states.

2:13.1

Here is Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell with two of them.
