Summary

Today's YGYG (You Get The Gist) is focusing on the promise of there being genetic tests that would help your doctor choose the most effective medication for you. It's exciting to consider due to the fact that many people have to try several medications before finding one that works for them - while at the same time managing ongoing mental and emotional problems. But there's lots of debate and new research happening - so here's a rundown from the experts. I'd certainly recommend that you talk to your doctor about it!

My book entitled Perfectly Hidden Depression has arrived and you can order here! Its message is specifically for those with a struggle with strong perfectionism or need for control which acts to mask underlying emotional pain. But the many self-help techniques described can be used by everyone who chooses to begin to address emotions, long hidden away, that are clouding and sabotaging your current life.

And there’s a new way to send me a message! You can record by clicking below and ask your question or make a comment. You’ll have 90 seconds to do so and that time goes quickly. By recording, you’re giving SelfWork (and me) permission to use your voice on the podcast. I’ll look forward to hearing from you!

Hello and welcome to self-work. I'm Dr. Margaret Rutherford and this is a YGTG or you get

0:12.6

the gist. Certainly when you enter the world of psychotropic medications, psychotropic

0:17.7

meaning drugs used for psychiatric or psychological treatment, some people respond positively to

0:22.4

the first medication they try. Others develop what are fairly common side effects, some

0:27.1

which go away within a week or two, some of which are tolerated. In fact, I saw a new warning

0:32.3

term out there called depressed settling, meaning you put up with side effects, depressed

0:37.4

settling, interesting. And then some side effects actually preclude taking it. You can sometimes

0:43.7

have to try many different medications and it can take a long time to find something

0:48.0

that works and let's not forget. You're also trying to manage your illness all at the

0:52.0

same time. It's also frustrating if your doctor says some side effects couldn't be

0:56.5

the medication. I was put on serzone years ago, which has now been taken off the market

1:00.9

in its pure form. I told my doc that I was seeing little stars when I first got up that

1:05.9

went away in a few seconds. And he pooped with the idea that that could be the serzone, but

1:10.5

guess what? I got off in the stars, which I actually kind of enjoyed went away. But side

1:15.6

effects can be very difficult and can be hard on your body, your mind, and your spirit.

1:20.8

So obviously the idea that there could be a test that could determine how a medication

1:24.8

might affect you would be awesome, right? Well, now many are touting that they exist.

1:29.8

I've had more than one patient or friend tell me that their psychiatrist or treatment

1:34.0

center ordered a genetic test to help them make medication decisions and then tell me

1:38.8

all about the drugs they found would not be effective or where they would be harmful side

1:42.8

effects. I looked online this week and found that you can actually see these for yourself,

1:48.5

but it looked like they still needed to be ordered by prescribing entity. The cost was
