Today's tip is that self-help can be helpful.

Reading or rereading some of the classics self-help books can be a fun way to fire yourself up.

We're making the most of daily life.

Because I write self-help books, I have read a lot of other self-help books over the years.

And many of them are, well, forgettable. But a few have definitely stood out.

I remember encountering the late Stephen Covey's The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, a few years after it came out.

And finding certain precepts such as, begin with the end in mind, and put first things first, quite insightful.

Thinking through my priorities ahead of each week, and thinking of them for both work and my personal life, has helped me manage long-term projects like book writing,

while trying to create a happy home life too.

But it's not just Covey who's had some good advice.

Dale Carnegie leans more toward the personality ethic that Covey sometimes laments.

But he was quite wise about human nature. People like to hear their names.

People do things when they want to do things. So if you want them to do something,

you are better off arousing in them an eager want, as he puts it.

I am not sure I have gotten my two-year-old to experience an eager want for potty trading, but I am definitely trying to think about it from his perspective.

Even the most offbeat folks might have some useful ideas.
