I was taking a walk and I was trying to decide should I, should I do the Selena film or not?

And I met two little girls.

You have these moments in your life as a filmmaker and I think everybody's life where it's almost like the cosmos

sends you a message, right? And I met these two little girls. One was eight years old,

when was 10 years old, they were Chicana, Mexicas, and they had Selena t-shirts on. And I asked them, why do you love Selena? And they looked up at me

and they said, because she looks like us. And that was like an arrow to my heart. It just broke my

heart because I realized at that moment that all of our young people and all of our young

women, they have no images on the screen, that they can see, that they can relate to, that they can identify with.

They live in a world of blonde young women and they have no young women who look like them.

And they have no Disney princess.

We still don't have a Disney princess.

So at that moment, I thought, I'm going to make this film.

And I'm going to make it for those young girls.

I'm going to give them their princess. And that's what started my journey to do this film.

I was very touched by Salina's Light. And I felt that I wanted to do a film to bring all the

talent that I have and bring all the most talented people I know to come together to make

a film that would preserve that beautiful life of first.
