Summary

If you've been a long time listener to this show, you'll know today's show is a combination of some of my most favorite topics in one episode.

Sam Harris is a neuroscientist, philosopher, and author of five New York Times best sellers, including The End of Faith, Letter to a Christian Nation, The Moral Landscape, Free Will, Lying, Waking Up, and Islam and the Future of Tolerance (with Maajid Nawaz). His work covers a wide range of topics from the worlds of neuroscience, moral philosophy, meditation, mindfulness, and rationality with the focus to help us grow an understanding of ourselves and the world around us.

Some topics we dive into:

  • The biological functions of fear, how it holds us back, and ways we can overcome it
  • How to use mindfulness to shift our mindset to work in our favor
  • We talk a little bit about psychedelics and experimenting with opening the mind
  • What does it mean to be creative, how to access it, and make it work for us

If you want to hear more from Sam, be sure to check out his popular podcast, Making Sense, and his meditation/mindfulness app Waking Up. In fact, if you want start a daily mindfulness meditation practice, you can try it for free @ http://cr8.lv/wakingup

Sam is a neuroscientist, a philosopher,

0:17.0

and I think kind of went to the four five New York Times bestselling books covering a huge

0:23.8

range of topics and all of these topics they light me up which is one of the reasons I've

0:28.6

been wanted to have Sam on the show for a long time not the least of which is his amazing

0:33.0

podcast making sense but he is a guru in the worlds of neuroscience, moral philosophy, meditation,

0:43.1

mindfulness, and rationality. But he generally focuses on how to grow an understanding of

0:49.1

ourselves and the world around us and how best to live, which if you know anything about me,

0:55.0

those are all super key aspects of why I like to explore creativity and specifically mindset, which is one of the

1:01.4

reasons I want to have Sam on the show for a long time. He's practiced meditation for 30 years

1:07.6

across a number of traditions, Tibetan, Indian, Burmese, and of course, Western meditation

1:13.6

here in the U.S. and abroad. And this is what I would consider a wide-ranging discussion

1:20.1

on topics that I've been... Imagine if there's someone who you respect and admire and you can

1:24.9

sort of pin them down for 60 to 90 minutes and ask them all of the

1:28.4

questions that you want to ask them. And someone who's incredibly smart will sit there,

1:33.2

patiently answer those questions. That's what this episode is. For me, we talk about fear.

1:39.4

I, you know, it's, um, it's true that I believe fear holds us back.

1:45.5

It is the key ingredient that by and large keeps us from the lives that we wished we were

leading.
