Pekare made history in 2006 when at just 22 years old he defeated a 26 year incumbent state representative to become the youngest member of the South Carolina State legislature and the youngest African American elected official in the nation.

In 2014, Bakari was the Democratic nominee

for lieutenant governor in the state of South Carolina

and then he went on to serve,

unfortunately not in that capacity, but as a political analyst at

CNN and served in the South Carolina State Legislature as well, recently named times 40 under 40 list he is also a practicing attorney who

fights to give a voice to the voiceless he is the author of several books including

his newest release,
