Summary

Over the past few months and, more acutely, weeks, there has been an increase in contentious feelings among us as people and, unfortunately, between us a disciples of Christ. In this episode we study the Lord's directions to early members of the Restored Church in search of guidance for how we should respond to affliction and conflict ourselves. In short: we seek to proclaim peace in a world at war.  Show Notes: Jeffrey R. I'm your sole host this week, Zach Horton. My wife, Christ, is taking a

0:23.9

break for this week. So it's just me. You get apologies early, but I am really excited for what we

0:29.8

get to study. This is sections 98 through 101. And we're calling this episode afflicted. And we'll talk a little bit about what

0:40.3

affliction means and more importantly, how we are to respond to it. As we're recording

0:46.2

this episode, we're coming off of a week of a lot of things that could be considered

0:50.8

afflictions, both things outside of human control. We live on the East

0:56.4

Coast and we had Hurricane Ida, of course, that hit heavy in the south, but we got some remnants

1:02.4

of that up here. In the Philadelphia area, some of our freeways were completely submerged in

1:07.6

water. There were some tornadoes that hit around the area. So that's

1:12.3

happened in the last week. And then there's been some afflictions in the church, some causes

1:19.7

for disagreement and contention and difficulty among members globally. And of course, all of that piled on top of COVID restrictions and masks

1:33.5

and vaccinations and the debates swirling around all of that. And so as we studied this week,

1:40.8

we couldn't help see the similarities between a little bit of what the world is facing and what the church members are facing in the early 1830s that caused the Lord to give them this series of revelations.

So it's an incredibly relevant section or a couple of sections to study.

To begin, just to set the stage, this is the beginning of each of the

2:08.2

sections this week, and you can see the thread of affliction carried throughout them. So this is

2:14.2

section 98, verse 3. Therefore, he giveth this purpose unto you with an immutable

2:21.9

covenant that they should be fulfilled. And all things wherewith you have been afflicted shall work

2:29.7

together for your good and to my name's glory saith the Lord. That's the beginning of section 98,
