Summary

"Welcome to Zion" said no sign nor person when the early Saints entered Missouri. Instead, they found only a few homes and stores, a somewhat irreligious society, and a situation that prompted at least some degree of disappointment. Finding Zion turned out to be the easy part: building Zion that hard. So too it is with us: knowing what we want our lives to look like--what kind of "Zion" we want--is simple; building that Zion takes work and effort. In this episode we study some of the not-so-easy/not-so-pretty side of growth and change to help us conscientiously roll up our figurative sleeves and go to work. 0:57.3

They're very angry birds in our yard and they just yell at each other all day.

1:01.2

I like to think of them as happy birds. They're singing. They sound angry.

1:05.9

They sound a little angry. So if you hear screeches in the backgrounds, it indeed is not our children.

1:12.8

It is birds, but maybe you won't even hear them anyway and we'll just make an excuse for something

1:18.1

you can't hear anyway. But this week, we have an continuation of, from our episode last week.

1:27.1

Last week we talked about that getting to Zion. How do we

1:30.4

find Zion? How do we get there? And this week is, okay, now that they are in Zion, they have found

1:37.8

it, they're getting to this place, and it is not as cool as they thought it was going to be.

1:48.0

In fact, it's pretty bad, pretty hard. Yeah, in fact, I've got a couple of descriptions from people that wrote about their impressions of Zion once they got there.

1:57.0

So this is W.W. Phelps who just said there were the people in Jackson County,

2:04.7

their customs, manners, modes of living in climate were entirely different from the Northerners.

2:10.6

That's the mildest one I could find. There's another history that mentioned the people living in

2:16.5

Jackson County were the basest of men

2:19.1

who had fled from the face of civilized society to the frontier country to escape the hand
