Summary

In episode 274 of the podcast Chris Brennan gives a detailed overview of the concept of sect in astrology, which is the difference between day and night birth charts. Sect is a fundamental concept that was used in Hellenistic astrology, but it has only been recovered by contemporary astrologers over the past 30 years through translations of ancient texts. The purpose of this talk is to give a broad introduction to sect, first by establishing how pervasive the concept is in ancient astrology, and then to demonstrate how it works in practice through chart examples. This episode was recorded as a live stream with an audience of patrons who support the podcast through our page on Patreon each month: https://www.patreon.com/astrologypodcast To learn more about sect, check out Chris' book on Hellenistic astrology, or his online course on ancient astrology. Hi, my name is Chris Brennan, and you're listening to the Astrology Podcast.

0:04.2

This is episode 274, and I'm recording it on Sunday, October 11th, 2020, starting at 534 PM in Denver, Colorado.

0:13.4

In this episode, I'm going to be talking about the concept of sect,

0:16.6

which is the difference between day and night charts,

0:20.4

and a technical distinction that's used to differentiate people that were born during the day

0:25.9

versus people that were born at night.

0:28.6

So I'm doing this in front of an audience of patrons and students of the Hellenistic

0:33.7

astrology course. Thanks everybody who joined me today on short notice. This is

0:37.4

kind of unique because it's a solo episode. Usually I'm talking to

0:40.4

somebody, but I decided to do this one as a solo episode because it's more of a lecture and I have a lot of like PowerPoint slides and it wouldn't make as much sense as a dialogue, but I'm hoping to get some good questions still from people in the audience.

0:54.3

So for those of you that are looking for like a really brief concise introduction to the concept of sect,

1:00.7

I would recommend looking at my older video where I did like a five or ten minute quick

1:05.3

overview of sect a few years ago, and I'll link to that probably in the description below

1:10.0

this video on YouTube. This video instead is going to be much more of a deep dive into the concept of sect.

1:17.0

It's still going to be a broad overview or introduction in a sense, but I'm probably going to talk for

1:21.6

like an hour and a half or two hours here so that we're really going to give you a relatively solid introduction to the concept.

1:29.0

All right, so without out of the way, let's jump right into it. So the title of this talk, provisionally, is

1:35.0

sect in astrology, day and night charts. I gave a version of this lecture a few years ago at the

1:40.3

Northwest Astrology conference, but one of the things I realized last month when

1:45.6

Lisa Schein and I did a Q&A and one of the main questions that we asked was about the concept

1:50.1

of sect and one of the questions was, you know, how do you know when it becomes a day chart versus a night chart I realize there was still some basic

1:56.7

unfamiliarity with this concept even though we use it on the podcast all the time and it's something I talk about in my book and my courses.
