super Sherlock Holmeses, who are called in when everything else has failed, but that is not

true, is it, per se? And no, Clive, the special branch of Scotland Yard is unit of a couple of hundred men who specialize in political crimes. The Special

investigation department in that they must be able to speak several languages.

In fact, the function of the special branch in official

language is to guard the security of the state or as the boys themselves put it to

create up political nuisances. So today a special branch man may find himself guarding the king or the prime minister

probing the antecedents of political refugee who seeks the protection of British

nationality tracking down the perpetrators of a bomb outrage or sauntering among the guests at a Royal Garden Party.
