We're coming into winter, at least for those of you listening in the Northern Hemisphere,

and as the leaves fall off the trees and the days get darker and colder,

it's easy to give into gloom. Complaining about

freezing temperatures and sleet and snow could basically be its own winter

Olympic sport. Of course people in my part of North America don't have nearly as intense

winters as people far to the north. In Northern Alaska for instance in

Scandinavia the sun sets in November and does not rise until January.

It sounds impossibly bleak to me.

But a few years ago, I wrote about some research on people who lived in these far northern

places.

They did not suffer from outsized rates of the winter blues.
