Not many people talk about this town.

There's nobody here and nothing to do, which is of course why nobody mentions Adelaide,

but it's precisely why I loved it here.

The cobbler's flu hit South Australia incredibly hard, and to this day no one really knows why.

The flu spreads in crowded populations, it thrives in cold weather, and yet somehow in this

spacious warm city it ran rampant for months.

Hundreds of thousands of people died, and hundreds of thousands more fled until the city was

all but abandoned.

The strange thing is it was just this one state that was so dramatically impacted.

Even as people fled to neighboring New South Wales and Queensland, they didn't seem to

bring the flu with them, or at least not in the numbers you would expect.

There have been theories over the years of course, an inept local government failing to respond

properly, the spread of false information about the disease, but there were other places

that didn't respond.

Other cities flooded with lies yet, the numbers from Adelaide eclipse them all.

There may be a completely straightforward explanation of course, but record keeping was never

reliable during the reckoning, so we'll never know what it was.

The garner people began moving back into the area in the 60s, reclaiming the land that

had been taken from them by the British Empire.

They started to rebuild and others soon joined them, but the population is still a fraction

of what it was.

I mean, it's not unique in that way.
