left one man dead and two injured, Albert Dryden was arrested and taken into custody.

The incident followed a long-running row over a bungalow built without planning permission.

It was supposed to be a routine operation to demolish this building put up without planning

permission, but it all ended with a senior planning officer shot dead, a policeman and a television

reporter wounded. Following the siege which lasted two hours, a man was arrested after a struggle

with armed police. The drama continued into the afternoon amid fears that the bungalow at the

centre of the dispute had been booby-trapped and explosive experts were called in.

The trial began on Monday, March 16, 1992 at Newcastle Crown Court, with the judge Justice

Ann Ebb's worth overseeing the proceedings. Albert Dryden was charged with one count of murder relating

to the death of Council planner Harry Collinson. Three counts of attempted murder against BBC

reporter Tony Belmont, PC Campbell and solicitor Michael Dunston, and finally two counts of wounding

within ten due to the injuries suffered by Belmont and Campbell. The defendant pleaded not guilty

to all six charges on the grounds of diminished responsibility. During opening statements the jury

looked impassive as they watched BBC news coverage of the planning dispute in which dried and

shot dead Harry Collinson before turning the gun on the crowd of onlookers who were desperately

trying to flee. They then watched the same event but from a different angle taken by an employee
