It's a dark night in May 1297,

and the occupants of the small castle in the Scottish town of Lanark have turned in for the evening.

A calm has descended. In the kitchens all that can be heard is the dying crackle of the fire left stoked

when the cooks retired to bed and the scratches of mice scuttling around the reed strewn stone floors.

In the hall and the chambers, conversation has finished for the evening, giving way to the steady snoring of the men inside.

Those men are an English sheriff called William Hesselrig and his team who are in town to oversee the sessions of a law court.
