Summary

Richard has worn down French King Philip into agreeing a truce, but still has plenty of enemies to take care of. He heads to a castle in Aquitaine to teach the rebellious lord there a lesson. The Lionheart has won countless sieges and these defenders don’t look well prepared, so he jumps into the action himself. But fate is about to intervene, changing the Plantagenet world forever.  This is History is a Sony Music Entertainment production.   Find more great podcasts from Sony Music Entertainment at sonymusic.com/podcasts     To bring your brand to life in this podcast, email podcastadsales@sonymusic.com    Written and presented by Dan Jones Producer - Clem Hitchcock  Series Producer and Story Editor - Georgia Mills Executive  Producer - Dave Anderson Production Manager - Jen Mistri  Composer -  Matt Acheson  Sound Design and Mixing - Chris O'Shaughnessy Learn more about your ad choices. The battle for the fortress is eerily quiet. There are 40 men and women inside the castle

0:10.7

of Shalu Shabrol in Aquitaine. Hundreds of attackers swarm outside, they're fighting

0:17.3

hell for leather, but their weapons of choice aren't catapults or battering rams. What

0:24.5

you hear on this day, just before Easter in 1199, is the creak and strain of hard-you-wood

0:32.4

bent taught. The thwack and twang have strong twine snapping forward. Grunts of effort

0:41.8

as men load and reload. The thud have small metal-tipped bolts slamming into shields. The

0:51.8

two sides are fighting with crossbows. These weapons are light, portable, accurate and

0:58.6

easy for anyone to pick up, point and shoot. They're the cult peacemakers, or AK-47s, of

1:06.8

the late 12th century. Unlike those modern weapons, crossbows don't make a bang when

1:13.4

they go off. But if a crossbow bolt catches you in the wrong place, you're in big trouble.

1:22.2

What's happening around Shalu Shabrol in late March 1199 is a fight no louder than a game

1:29.4

of laser tag. But the stakes are life and death.

1:38.8

In this deadly game, the attackers are led by Richard the Lionheart, King of England and

1:45.2

Lord of the Plantagenet Empire. For nearly five years, Richard has been fighting to win back

1:52.6

his lands. Land's arch rival, Philip Augustus, the King of France, stole while he was stuck in jail.

2:02.6

Since his release, Richard has been blasting through enemy castles and troops like their twigs.

2:09.4

He's been doing so well, in fact, that Philip Augustus has asked him for a truce.

2:17.8

As we heard last time, Richard agreed to the amnesty, but still, the Lionheart's world is large

2:25.2

and full of enemies. He's in Shalu Shabrol fighting an ally of Phillips who isn't protected by

2:32.9

the terms of the peace. That's the count of limoge, a long time thorn in the Plantagenet's side.

2:41.8

Richard wants to kick the count's legs out from under him, then maybe kick his head in while he's

2:47.1

on the ground. In military terms, that means taking the count's castles, starting with Shalu Shabrol.
