0:10.8	This time I'd like to introduce you to six people whose lives were forever changed by
0:14.4	the AIDS epidemic.
0:16.6	Their stories will expand on what you heard last season when I share some of my own experience
0:21.2	from the first dozen years of the AIDS crisis.
0:24.5	And I hope will give you a deeper understanding of what people lived through in the 1980s
0:29.1	and beyond.
0:31.5	Among those you'll hear from is novelist Randy Boyd.
0:34.6	As a closeted black kid from Indiana, Randy quickly realized that he wouldn't fit in
0:39.3	at the University of Southern California.
0:41.2	Instead, he found community in L.A.'s gay bath houses.
0:45.8	I mean, how could I not have been HIV positive?
0:48.4	I turned 18 in 1980.
0:51.2	A month after my 18th birthday in February of 1980, I go to my first bath house and I
0:57.5	start going to these sexual venues as my only real way of defining myself as a gay man.
1:03.9	So I went for social and sexual reasons.
1:07.1	And by God, let's face it, we all need sex and when you're young, you really need it
1:11.1	bad.
1:12.1	There's no way in the world I couldn't be HIV positive.
1:17.2	Pioneering gay journalist Randy Schultz wrote and the band played on, the 1987 bestseller
1:22.6	about the history of the AIDS crisis.
