This is the Salaback Church podcast. Welcome back to our At the Movies series.

Throughout this series, we are taking a look at themes and principles from some great movies over the last few years.

And today's movie is Lion.

It's a true story based on the life of Saru Briarley. True stories are always my favorite kind of movies to watch

because I get so drawn into the narrative.

And then I find myself researching more details about the character's life

long after the movie's over, normally in my bed with my iPhone,

just scroll, scroll, scroll, and that's definitely what happened to me with this movie.

Saru's life journey is one of impossible heartbreak and desperate searching and this unrelenting

perseverance. His life has a lot to inspire ours as we reflect on it today. And when we

meet Saru at the beginning of the movie, he's a young boy that's born in an impoverished village in

India. Saru and his older brother, Guru, would often search for dropped coins and food on trains to help their struggling

mother and siblings.

From our perspective, they have almost nothing.

But even though they don't have much in the way of worldly possessions, they have so much

of what matters most because they have each other.

After searching for his missing brother, Goudou,

Saru falls asleep on an empty train, waiting for his brother to hopefully return. But when he

wakes up hours later, he's already hundreds and hundreds of miles away from home with no way

to get off the train. When he finally does, he's alone in a very dangerous city of

Calcutta. For three weeks, completely by himself, this five-year-old little boy fights to survive on the

streets of Calcutta. Hungry and lost and afraid, little Saru begins a search that will last for over two
