Summary

Pac-12 commissioner candidate, Andy Staples, welcomes venerable Bay Area News Group reporter, Jon Wilner, to discuss the Pac-12 conference's intention to part ways with commissioner Larry Scott (:15). Why are the member schools' presidents splitting with Scott, and did the 56-year-old steward of the division live up to expectations? Who's on the (not so) short list of candidates (14:00), and what criticism of Scott's tenure seems unfair to Andy (16:30)?

$5 million a year sounds great.

0:20.6

Getting fired and getting paid $5 million a year

0:23.9

to not work sounds even better. And I think I'd be terrible at it, terrible enough to get fired

0:29.1

quickly so I could keep getting paid to not work. But my guest probably has some better ideas

0:35.2

about who should be the commissioner and definitely about what the

The presidents have met and they've said, you know, stay on through June.

1:02.8

We'll keep paying you through next year, but you got to go.

1:06.2

You know, I was surprised at the thing, but not surprised at the result, right?

1:09.8

I had kind of figured they got to make a change. I mean, it's just there's no way they can continue to road for five more years. But I wasn't necessarily expecting it to happen right now. I had kind of been thinking it would be, you know, deeper in the spring. So they're not paying two commissioners for as long, possibly.

1:30.4

And also because, you know, the presidents typically meet in the spring.

1:35.6

But they came to a conclusion.

1:37.5

And, you know, it's good for the conference that they did it sooner because they can get somebody in.

1:41.6

They're going to try to have somebody in place by July 1st, a little bit quick, but that's their goal. And the reason for this is the PAC 12 is about

1:49.1

to be negotiating a new TV deal, which, by the way, is the reason Larry Scott was brought in from

1:54.3

the DeWomen's Tennis Association in the first place. And we'll give our listeners here a little

1:59.7

history lesson. So Larry Scott was a genius once.
