March 16 marks the one-year anniversary of the shooting at three Atlanta area spas.

Eight people were killed in that shooting, six of whom were a vision to send.

The shooter was a white man.

At the time of the shooting, various organizations had said that they were hearing increased reports of violence and harassment targeted at Asian Americans.

Everything from racial slurs being hurled to violent physical attacks.

Now, a year later, that trend doesn't seem to have changed.

Preliminary data from the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism reveals that as of today,

anti-Asian hate crimes had increased more than 260 percent in 2021 compared to the year before.

And as our colleagues have reported, the group Stop AAPI hate has tracked nearly 11,000 hate incidents against Asian Americans from March 2020 to December 2021.

Just this month, Amanda New York punched a woman 125 times.

He told authorities he assaulted her because she was Asian.

That attack is being charged as a hate crime.

The victim remains hospitalized in stable condition.

So this week, we're revising an episode we aired last March shortly after the attacks in Atlanta.

It looks at this country's long history of animus toward Asian Americans and how this uptick in violence may not really be that new at all.
