On this program, Debbie Milman talks with Scott Stoll about how we got into graphic design as a teenager,

the importance of language into graphic design as a teenager,

the importance of language in graphic design,

and what it's like when a client calls to break up with you.

The video for this talking head song Nothing But Flowers did something no one had seen

before. As David Byrne sang, the lyrics appeared in time with the music.

Now that wasn't new exactly, but now the words had personality. They curved, they danced, they scooted and cascaded across the screen.

Think of it like karaoke on hallucinogens instead of alcohol.

That type was set in motion by T. Bork Helmin and Emily Oberman at Emman Company, with assistance from a young intern named Scott Stoll.

Scott later went on to work for Colors magazine in Rome, and in 1998 he founded his own studio open.

Nowadays, Scott and a group of collaborators do print,

broadcast, and web design.

They've worked for Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Whitney Museum, Bravo, M TV, Good magazine, and

the nation, among others.

And while Open does all kinds of design, they still use words to make beautiful things.
