I always let the audience tell me what my job is. I don't do it the other way around.

When I did Dilbert, I put it out there and it really was a failure in the first couple of years.

It didn't get many newspapers to pick it up, a small audience. But a lot of people wrote to me by

email, because it was the birth of email back then. And they said, we like your comic.

it when he's in the office. And I didn't know that. So it wasn't a workplace comic when I started

it. But so many people told me that's what it needed to be. I just changed it.

And then it took off. So that was my big break is just listening to what the audience wanted.

Likewise, when I started talking about politics, mostly online, people wanted to hear me talk about persuasion in particular.

And they wanted to hear it through that lens. And they wanted to hear me talk about persuasion in particular, and they wanted to hear it through that lens, and they wanted to hear somebody they regarded as objective, because I'm neither a Republican or Democrat.

I could vote either way, depending on the individual.

I make sure people know that so that I've got a little extra X factor.
