I don't know what is meant by sophistication.

Authentic as much as possible to the characters and the world that they're in, whether it's

mean streets or age of innocence, as authentic as possible. Yes, there are certain worlds I know better than others,

but ultimately it's the characters.

It's the people that carry me through.

So it has to be authentic to the character.

Maybe that's where a sophistication comes in.

I'm not quite sure what is meant by sophistication in this case.

It could be a sophistication of utilizing, you know, the medium of the camera.

But the more I shoot these days, the more I realize it's of an older kind.

When I see young people using the social media or recording events

or just speaking to each other through iPhones and, you know,

that's a whole new visual language

that's happening. And that's going to be as, how should I put it as commonplace to my generation

as cinema or television was to us. This is a whole way of seeing the world that's very, very

different. So in terms of sophistication, I think I still find myself trying to find ways to use the image in a simpler way,

and almost more formal even. I'm not quite sure.

But it has to do with the authenticity to the characters in the world they're in.
