An Oxford biologist believes that, after humans inevitably go extinct, octopuses may rise to become

the next great civilization builders, and they've already

started constructing underwater cities.

come from conspiracy theorists in tinfoil hats or doomsday preppers stockpiling canned beans

in underground bunkers. Sometimes they come from perfectly respectable Oxford professors who

casually suggest that, after humanity inevitably wipes itself out, a species with blue blood,

three hearts and a brain shaped like a donut, will eventually

roam the land in reverse scuba gear, hunting deer with rifles."

Darren, surely this is some French scientist looking for attention. No. Professor

Tim Colson holds the position of Professor of Zoology at the University of Oxford, where he's been researching

and teaching biology for over three decades. The man has published more than 200 scientific

papers. His 2024 book, The Universal History of Us, traces the entire 13.8 billion-year journey

from the Big Bang to human consciousness. It's a sprawling, critically acclaimed

work that Richard Dawkins himself praised. This is not some guy with a YouTube channel

and a theory. This is a serious academic with serious credentials, making a prediction that sounds

like the pitch for a sci-fi original movie. And Colson doesn't mince words about humanity's future. He points out

that all species go extinct, every single one. In fact, 99.9% of every species that

has ever existed is already gone. Extinct. Finished.

So humans will go extinct too. It's not a question of if, but when.

That's a pleasant thought.
