Summary

Is there scientific proof of the soul? Joining Frank in this eye-opening podcast episode is Dr. Michael Egnor, a practicing neurosurgeon, neuroscientist, and Professor of Neurosurgery at Stony Brook University. In his new book, 'The Immortal Mind: A Neurosurgeon’s Case for the Existence of the Soul', co-authored with Denise O’Leary, Dr. Egnor draws from over 7,000 brain surgeries and decades of experience to challenge the popular materialist view of the human person. Together, Frank and Michael will tackle questions like:* How did a spiritual experience involving his son change Dr. Egnor’s worldview?* What is the scientific evidence for the soul and the mind?* Is there a difference between the mind and the brain?* What do conjoined twins and patients with missing brain parts reveal about consciousness?* How are verifiable Near Death Experiences evidence for the soul?* Why do most neuroscientists still cling to materialism despite contrary evidence? From fascinating case studies to philosophical insights from Aquinas and Aristotle, this episode will challenge the materialist narrative that you are just your brain. If you know someone who’s scientifically minded but open to deeper questions about human nature, this book is a must read! Ladies and gentlemen, is there any scientific evidence for the soul?

0:07.0

Is there scientific evidence for the mind?

0:10.0

Or are the mind and the brain the same thing?

0:14.0

Do you really have a soul or you just have a body?

0:17.0

Well, you might be surprised to learn there's some new research out there from a scientific

0:21.9

perspective that I think shows beyond any reasonable doubt. You not only have a mind, you also

0:27.7

have a soul. And it comes from Dr. Michael Eggnor, who is a professor of neurosurgery and

0:35.1

pediatrics at Stony Brook University. It's the School of Medicine there.

0:40.6

He got his training at the University of Miami. But he's been at Stony Brook since 1991.

0:47.1

Get this. He's done over 7,000 brain surgeries. In fact, as we record this here today, he's going to be in surgery tomorrow.

0:56.1

He's still doing these surgeries.

0:58.2

And he has compiled with Denise O'Leary, his co-author, an amazing new book that documents

all this.

1:07.8

It's called The Immortal Mind, a neurosurgeon's case for the existence of the soul.

1:16.4

So pull up a chair because this is going to be a fascinating discussion with Dr. Eggnor.

As I say, he comes all the way from Stony Brook University, ladies and gentlemen, on Long Island, the site of a debate I had with

Dr. Michael Shermer many years ago. Dr. Michael Eggnort, it's great to have you on the program.

1:36.2

How are you? I'm great, Frank. Thank you so much for having me. Oh, my pleasure. I've been

1:40.8

watching your interviews and reading your book. And I think it's fascinating

1:46.7

what you've written here. And I also think it's fascinating your story because you started as an

1:50.9

atheist and a materialist. You were a brain surgeon. What shook you out of materialism?

1:58.3

Well, many things. I think the Lord shook me out of materialism, but he used some clever devices. I was brought up kind of in an atheist environment, and I always respected Christianity. I thought it was a lovely story. I thought Christians were really nice people.
