I'm changing the names in a few small details because this involved an elderly victim and a criminal case that went through court.

But the part that matters happened the way I'm about to tell it.

I worked nights as a deputy in a rural county, where most of the calls were the kind you would expect.

Cows out, drunk drivers, domestic arguments that had been going on for 20 years before anyone finally called us.

Every now and then we would get a prowler call from somebody who lived alone.

And nine times out of ten it was a raccoon on the porch, or a neighbor turning

around in the driveway. I never treated those calls like a joke, though, because people

who live way out in the county know the normal sounds around their house. They know when a branch

scrapes the siding. They know when the water heater kicks on. They know the difference

between a coyote in the pasture and a person walking through the gravel outside their bedroom window.

That is one thing I learned early. Scared people can still be very accurate. This happened on a

Thursday night in late October. It had been raining off and on since dinner, not hard rain,

just a cold, steady drizzle that made the roads shine black and kept most people inside.

I was working the east side of the county by myself. My closest backup was Deputy Morales,

and he was at least 20 minutes away if he was driving normal, and maybe 12 or 13 if he pushed it.

The dispatcher that night was a woman named Tessa, who had been doing the job for years and rarely

sounded rattled. A little after two in the morning, she came over the radio and told me she

had an open line from a residence at the very end of County Road 7,

possible prowler, elderly female caller, alone in the house.

I remember her voice changing a little when she added.

Caller says there is a man inside the residence wearing her deceased husband's clothes.

I asked Tessa to repeat that because I thought I had missed part of it.
