Jemar Tisbee and we are doing a special throwback episode of a pass the mic conversation we had all the way back in 2017,

but it is relevant today.

So as I record this in June, the Southern Baptist Convention, which is the largest Protestant

denomination in the country, is meeting for its annual convention.

Thousands of what they call messengers are descending on Richmond, Virginia this year to talk about denominational business.

Now this is mostly a snore fest, lots of Robert's rules of order, light of eyes and nays, and second this and second that.

But important work does get done here, and there's always some drama.

This year, the drama has to do with women's ordination. The SBC is what they call

complementarian so they believe in distinct roles for men and women. In this

case they say only men can be ordained as pastors but the rub is some

SBC churches including some very prominent ones have featured women in

increasingly visible leadership roles and some churches are even calling women

pastors.

Well, there's a far right contingent of the SBC that wants to clarify where the SBC stands and so they are discussing,

debating, arguing, and trying to pass a resolution on that. They've even

disfellowshiped churches for women's ordination.
