Summary

For quite sometime Traditionalists have attempted to save the word "sovereignty" from this generation's consistent misuse of the term (which I've been guilty of as well in the past). I was happy to learn that we are not alone in our efforts.

I recently happened upon an article posted by Paul D. Miller, a student at the Reformed Theological Seminary. It was posted by The Gospel Coalition, a Calvinistic organization, in which (to my delight) he properly defines the word "sovereignty."

The article "Saving Sovereignty": https://soteriology101.wordpress.com/2017/09/24/saving-sovereignty/

Hello, welcome to Sochiology 101. My name is Layton Flowers. I'm the director of apologetics for Texas Baptists.

And since I've started this podcast, I get asked at least on a weekly basis, why don't you affirm the sovereignty of God?

0:13.5

Or maybe, do you even believe in the sovereignty of God? The word is used so much in our culture today, and this is the way I feel typically when it's being used.

0:26.1

You keep using the word. I don't think it means what you think it means.

0:32.1

You ever feel like that? People use words, and they don't mean exactly what they think it means.

0:39.4

That's, I think, the way the word sovereignty has been misused.

0:42.9

And I think we as traditionalists, we've tried to save the word sovereignty.

0:46.5

Matter of fact, I wrote an article just recently called Saving Sovereignty 101, which you can go and check out.

And I was pleased to learn real recently in doing kind of a word study over the concept of

0:57.8

sovereignty that we're not alone in our efforts to save this word, that in fact there is an

article written by Paul Miller, a student at the Reformed Theological Seminary, that was posted

by the Gospel Coalition, which is a

1:11.6

predominantly Calvinistic organization. You might call them Armaldeans or Four Point Calvinists for the

1:15.9

most part, but they are very Calvinistic leaning, and he does a really good job of defining and

1:22.5

understanding what true sovereignty is, which again, I encourage you to go look up for yourself, go read

dictionaries, go read word studies, go find for yourself if men like John Piper and other

1:35.1

leading Calvinists are using the word sovereign in the correct, most precise way.

1:40.5

Paul Miller writes this with, again, the Gospel Coalition, What does it mean to say that God is sovereign?

1:46.1

The refrain has become so common, almost cliche in reformed writings and preaching,

1:51.0

that it sometimes slips away from the reader or listener without lodging meaning in mind.

1:55.9

Worse, we typically hear the phrase to mean something it doesn't.

1:59.4

When Christians affirm that God is sovereign, they often mean God is in control.
