You couldn't pay me to live in West Virginia.

You could try, but you'd have to pay me more than the $12,000 West Virginia is right now offering people to relocate to that state. And they do need people.

They need more people in West Virginia. The state has been shrinking for decades. The population

in the United States more than doubled between 1950 and today from 150 million people to

330 million people. Two million people lived in West Virginia in 1950. Only 1.8 million

people lived there today. Healthcare, infrastructure, the economy, education, the state ranks last

or close to last in all those categories. So getting people to move there, it can't be easy,

which is why West Virginia is bribing people to move there or sweetening the pot.

Move there and the state will give you 10K in your first year, another 2K in your second year.

That kind of money, $12,000 in two years would go a long way toward helping, say, immigrants settle in West Virginia.

Immigrants have revived a lot of small towns in Washington State, where I live over the last couple of decades. But West Virginia does not want immigrants. West Virginia voted for Donald

fucking Trump by 40 fucking points in 20 fucking 20. West Virginia wants highly educated tech workers, not highly motivated

immigrants. Immigrants, they start new businesses at higher rates than people who were born here,

less likely to commit violent crimes than people who were born here, but West Virginia doesn't want

any of that. They want tech people, remote workers, entrepreneurs.

They want highly educated people, but the kind of highly educated people who want their kids to go to schools where they don't teach evolution and their teachers aren't vaccinated.

Those highly educated people.
