So I wrote a blog post after the van attack in Toronto, after another angry in-cell,

the third by my count, went on a killing spree.

And my blog post opened with an embedded tweet.

Rachel Fagan tweeted,

Sex worker women are not a separate

class of women who exist to absorb the rage, anxiety, and sexualized violence of men so that

other women are quote unquote safe. They are also human women with the right to safety from violent

men. And then this for me. I agree with Rachel Fagan, I wrote. I have friends who do

sex work, women and men, and they are not human shields. Their lives are valuable, and they're not

here to soak up male rage. They deserve safe working conditions, and they deserve our respect,

not despite the work they do, but because of it. I continued, I have no sympathy for in-cells

involuntary celibates lurking in dark corners of the internet cheering on misogynistic violence.

I have no sympathy for anyone who picks up a gun or gets in a van and mows down women on their

way to class or work. So imagine my shock when I fired up the Twitter last night and read this.

A number of people, including Dan Savage, have suggested sex workers as one way to head off anger in involuntary celibates.

Yeah, no, not quite what I said. Actually, nowhere near what I said. I said

the opposite, in fact. I don't know how you get from sex workers are not human shields. They're

not here to soak up male rage to Dan Savage thinks we should throw sex workers to the angry,

raging incels. So let's try this again.
