This is an especially heartbreaking day for all of our friends, our fellow Americans, who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.

The shooter targeted a nightclub where people came together to be with friends,

to dance and to sing, and to live.

The place where they were attacked is more than a nightclub.

It is a place of solidarity and empowerment where people have come together to raise awareness,

to speak their minds, and to advocate for their civil rights.

Late on Saturday night, around 2 a.m., I was in a gay bar in Madison, Wisconsin.

At the exact same time, a deranged and bigoted monster was storming into a gay nightclub in Orlando.

Terry and I were having a beer at the Shamrock

at the same time that young, gay, lesbian,

buy and trans people were at a Latino nightclub dance party

at Pulse in Orlando.

It's become fashionable to run down gay bars to talk about how we're post, not quite post

gay.

Everyone throws post gay around, but a lot of us, a lot of people will say that they are

very much post gay bar, that gay bars are retro in some way or not needed

anymore, that we are living in a world, hopefully, or we're moving to no labels and a world

where, of course, with the internet, you don't really need a gay bar because you can find

everything you're looking for on grinder or scruff or
