Republican Party ran anti-same-sex marriage amendment campaigns in multiple states in an effort to

help successfully reelect George W. Bush, it seemed like the momentum was shifting our way,

that suddenly we were winning in the courts. Marriage equality had been enacted in Connecticut

by the legislature. Marriage equality had been passed in the California legislature and then

vetoed by Arnold Schwarzenegger, the then governor, but it had passed. And it just seemed like

the tide was turning. And there were two big state Supreme Court decisions that we were all

waiting for, New York and Washington State. And there was this expectation

that we were going to win these and that momentum would continue to build toward marriage

equality nationally. And in New York, the decision was handed down in 2006, upholding the state's

anti-gay marriage ban. And then the same thing happened in Washington state.

Decision came down upholding the state where I live, our states,

ban on same-sex marriage.

And people were deflated and upset.

And people worried that the tide, which just felt like it was turning,

was turning again and going back out.
