Here's something everyone in my line of work fears.

We're often in the position, all of us advice slingers, of telling people to break up with people.

I even have a signature, you know, handle, an acronym, DTMFA. I just throw that at people. They know exactly what I mean by that. Dump the motherfucker already because people will write me and they'll, you know, unpack or they'll call and they'll unpack these terrible situations. The relationship is awful and unfulfilling and the person they're with is a jerk. And then they say, but I don't know what to do. And it's obvious what they need to do and

they need to dump the motherfucker already. And so you're in the position where you're constantly

telling people to dump the motherfucker already. You have to actually put your thumb on the scales

when you write an advice column or do an advice show like this. Because if you're not careful,

every letter and every call

for weeks, months, years could be nothing but dump the motherfuckers already.

So many people need that push.

They need that permission.

And they often come to me for it after they've already exhausted the patience and goodwill

of all of their friends.

They say, none of my friends will talk to me about my relationship anymore

because their friends have been telling him to dump this motherfucker for so long. They're sick of it. They'll come to me and I'll say, dump the motherfucker already. And you worry, you know, that someday you're going to run into the motherfucker. And, you know, I always want to say, dump the motherfucker already, but don't tell them that I told you to do that.

Just do it of your own accord.

Because you worry, you're going to say, dump the motherfucker already, but don't tell them that I told you to do that.

Just do it if you're on a court.

Because you worry, you're going to run into the motherfucker who got dumped. And the person who dumped him said, Dan Savage told me to dump you. And so I'm dumping you. And, you know, then they'll be mad at you forever, potentially psychotically, angrily, violently mad at you forever. So I'm walking down the street and I'm in Los Angeles
