First, a traffic safety story. The city of Seattle is backing away from planned safety measures on Lake Washington Boulevard.

Seattle's Transportation Department says Lake Washington Boulevard has a very high collision rate.

It's a windy road with no shoulder, and it's shared by cars, bikes, and pedestrians

crossing to and from the waterside path.

The median driver goes 10 miles an hour over the speed limit.

So last fall, the city put in 12 speed bumps.

Shortly after they were installed, neighbor Aaron Duff walked with her baby and dogs along the

street. I'm of the mind that I wish we could do a little bit more and have it be more pedestrian

friendly and just safer. It's definitely a little scary to cross with the baby and the dogs every day.

But anything is better than nothing, so I'm glad that we're making these changes now.

Duff's opinion is in line with what the city found in two years of public outreach and surveys.

Most neighbors support safety measures on the street.

And in most Seattle neighborhoods, speed cushions go in without much comment.

That's not what happened on Lake Washington Boulevard.

The addition of multiple speed bumps has created even a new safety hazard because cyclists swerve to avoid them and cars swerve to avoid them.
