Today we're bringing you the best from our KUOWW newsroom.

First, a story about rare species in our region. Sometimes a species becomes so rare that you

might not know that it still exists. Puffins in the northwest are that way. Populations of the cute

seabirds with the big beak have plummeted since the 1980s,

but they're still out there if you know where to look.

John Ryan caught up with researchers hoping to help these cute, comical-looking birds bounce back.

70 years ago, a biologist named Ernest Booth recorded tufted puffins near

Anna Cordes in Burroughs Bay. He recorded an adult growling and a baby puffin or

puffling squealing to be fed. That historical audio is from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

70 years later, I interviewed biologist Peter Hottom on that same bay.
