John 7: 40-52- 'The Law does not allow us to pass judgement on a man without hearing him.'
Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:
- 575 (in 'Jesus and Israel')- Many of Jesus' deeds and words constituted a "sign of contradiction", but more so for the religious authorities in Jerusalem, whom the Gospel according to John often calls simply "the Jews", than for the ordinary People of God (abbreviated).
-595 (in 'Divisions amongst the Jewish authorities concerning Jesus')- Among the religious authorities of Jerusalem, not only were the Pharisee Nicodemus and the prominent Joseph of Arimathea both secret disciples of Jesus, but there was also long-standing dissension about him, so much so that St. John says of these authorities on the very eve of Christ's Passion, "many.. . believed in him", though very imperfectly (abbreviated).

0:00.0 | Hi everyone. Welcome back to the Logical Bible Study podcast. Thanks again for tuning in. |
0:18.4 | We are continuing in the Gospel of John today. The |
0:22.5 | lectionary reading for today is from John chapter 7 verse 40 to 52. And here's what that reading says. |
0:32.2 | Several people who had been listening to Jesus said, surely he must be a prophet. And some said he is the Christ, |
0:40.6 | but others said, would the Christ be from Galilee? Does not scripture say that the Christ must |
0:47.1 | be descended from David and come from the town of Bethlehem? So the people could not agree |
0:53.5 | about him. Some would have liked to arrest him, |
0:57.0 | but no one actually laid hands on him. The police went back to the chief priests and Pharisees |
1:03.8 | who said to them, why haven't you brought him? The police replied, there has never been anybody |
1:10.0 | who has spoken like him. |
1:12.4 | So, the Pharisees answered, you have been led astray as well. |
1:16.9 | Have any of the authorities believed in him? Any of the Pharisees? |
1:21.6 | This rabble knows nothing about the law. They are damned. |
1:27.1 | One of them, Nicodemus, the same man who had come to Jesus earlier, |
1:31.9 | said to them, but surely the law does not allow us to pass judgment on a man without giving him |
1:38.2 | a hearing and discovering what he is about. To this they answered, are you a Galilean too? Go into the matter and see for |
1:48.2 | yourself. Prophets do not come out of Galilee. So that's our passage for today, continuing in the |
1:57.5 | Gospel of John. And like a lot of other passages around this middle part of the |
2:01.7 | Gospel of John, it's about Jesus' identity. Where does Jesus come from? What do people think about |
2:06.8 | his identity? Just before this, Jesus has gone up to Jerusalem for the Feast of Tabernacles, and there's |
2:13.2 | been lots of discussion about whether he's the Messiah. Some people think he is. Some people think he's |
2:17.8 | not the Messiah. The crowds are finding his teachings quite confusing and that's why they can't |
