Luke 14: 1, 7-11 - 'Everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

- 575 (in 'Jesus and Israel') - To be sure, Christ's relations with the Pharisees were not  exclusively polemical. Some Pharisees warn him of the danger he was courting; Jesus praises some of them, like the scribe of Mark 12:34, and dines several times at their homes (abbreviated).

Hi everyone. Welcome again to Logical Bible Study, where we take an in-depth look at the gospel readings.

0:16.5

We do a verse-by-verse exegesis with the goal of helping you understand the literal sense of

0:21.7

scripture. What did the original author mean, using the original words that he used, trying to

0:27.4

speak to his original audience in their original context. So that's called looking at the literal

0:32.4

sense of scripture. And that's where we need to start as Catholics. The church teaches us

0:36.6

that if we want to understand the Bible, we have to start there.

0:40.1

We're continuing in Luke today. So if you go to Mass, you would hear from Luke, chapter 14, verse 1 and then verses 7 to 11.

0:48.6

So here's the reading. Now on a Sabbath day, Jesus had gone for a meal to the house of one of the leading Pharisees,

0:56.5

and they watched him closely.

0:59.2

He then told the guests a parable, because he had noticed how they picked the places of honor.

1:05.7

He said this, when someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take your seat in the place of honour.

1:13.2

A more distinguished person than you may have been invited, and the person who invited you

1:18.2

both may come and say, give up your place to this man. And then to your embarrassment, you would have to go

1:26.5

and take the lowest place.

1:28.7

No, when you are a guest, make your way to the lowest place and sit there.

1:34.6

So that when your host comes, he may say, my friend, move up higher.

1:40.3

In that way, everyone with you at the table will see you honored.

1:45.3

For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the man who humbled himself will be exalted.

1:54.5

So let's start by thinking about the context.

1:56.6

So Jesus is moving towards Jerusalem for the last part of his ministry.

2:02.7

And he's in a Pharisee's house.

2:07.7

If you listen to yesterday's episode, you'll know that this continues straight on from that.
